Challenges in Aluminum Precision Machining
Aluminum seems easy to machine, but precision machining has hidden pitfalls:
- Deformation control: 6061-T6 and 7075-T6 have twice the thermal expansion coefficient of steel — machining thermal deformation is hard to predict
- Surface quality: Aluminum is prone to built-up edge — surface roughness control requires specialized tools and cutting parameters
- Tolerance retention: Thin-wall housing parts experience aging deformation after machining — stress relief and finishing allowance are mandatory
